Soo is it only me, shocked and appalled at the transition from hip-hop to current day psuedo-rap? If we just rewind hip hop back to the era of Rakim through Biggie you will undoubtedly come across variations of rap such as Bone, Swisha House, Organized Konfusion, and Nelly but the essence of rap was still found in their lyrics. You may not have liked everybody but you accepted their art as hip hop. Straight stealing lyrics was tantamount to death, and the consistent use of synthesizers and other techniques such as dance moves were clowned. Essentially rappers were expected to rap. Battle, flow, and commit creative lyricism to be appreciated for years to come. Perhaps the decline of rap began when the music industry powers realized the talent and money making potential the hip hop industry could earn the "elite" and began manufacturing psuedo-rap and injecting into our media streams. The newest artists of today (not all but a good percentage) seemed to be composed of marketing and advertising gimmicks camouflaging the reality that there is no actual "art" in the artist. Here's a couple chains, prerequisite neck tattoos, excessive media play and blasts and wham a new artist is born. At the peak of hip hop, a rappers gear was less important than his message and the impact of his flow. Today, grab your brightly colored skinny jeans and you're in. End up on TMZ you're in. Mindless, nonsensical rap, your are number 1. Rap has left the origin of creating music and drifted into creating a sensation. Perfect example? Black Eye Peas from when they were the personification of underground hip hop to today, a joke during the Super Bowl half time show. Pop-Hop.
